Business improvement district NE1 wants to makes improvements to Newcastle's Quayside a key part of its next five-year plan

In the latest of pieces run as it seeks a renewal of its operations, Newcastle business improvement district NE1 Ltd discusses its plans for the city’s Quayside.

Pick up a newspaper or magazine, or switch on the TV over the last few weeks and Dundee has been making the news.

This small city on the east coast of Scotland is enjoying 15 minutes of fame internationally thanks to a renaissance fuelled by huge cultural investment and a £1bn transformation. Traditionally famous for jam, jute and journalism, the city has not forgotten its roots. The creativity that fuelled its success during the last industrial heyday has been reignited and is central to its current resurgence that is gaining worldwide acclaim.

Dundee has been named Unesco’s first City of Design and with the naming comes a transformation focused around the river Tay. Central to this has been the creation of the only V and A Museum outside London, the stunning building designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma that now dominates the river skyline.

Like many other UK cities, Dundee’s rejuvenation has focused on its art and cultural offer and perhaps most importantly, reimagining its riverside.

Newcastle, much like Dundee, is turning to its river for the next phase of the city’s redevelopment and to unlock its potential is looking internationally for inspiration. Championing this redevelopment is Business Improvement District company NE1 Ltd, which believes the Quayside and the River Tyne are the hidden jewels in Newcastle’s crown.
